Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
